The Mega-Hits Dissected

Thirteen years of billion-dollar 4X games, told as four eras. For each game: what it added to the formula, what it earned, and where it stands today (mid-2026). This is the chapter that makes you sound like you've watched the market for a decade.

First, the market you're talking about

Numbers to know cold Mobile strategy earned $17.5B in 2024 (+16% YoY), of which the 4X subgenre was $8.1B — roughly 10% of the entire mobile games market and its single highest-revenue subgenre. In 2025 strategy grew to ~$20B, the only genre to gain revenue, downloads and time spent. Nearly every major 4X is from a China-founded team; Century Games was 2025's #1 mobile game maker. (Sensor Tower State of Mobile Gaming 2025/2026; Appfigures 2025.)

Era 1 (2013–2016): The Machine Zone template

Game of War: Fire Age — the ancestor (Machine Zone, 2013)

Clash of Kings (Elex, 2014)

Era 2 (2016–2019): Refinement and widening the funnel

Lords Mobile (IGG, 2016)

Evony: The King's Return (Top Games, 2016)

Rise of Kingdoms (Lilith Games, 2018)

Era 3 (2019–2022): Theming and hybrid mechanics

Top War: Battle Game (Topwar Studio / River Game, 2019)

State of Survival (KingsGroup / FunPlus, 2019)

Puzzles & Survival (37Games, 2020) & Age of Origins (Camel Games, 2018)

Era 4 (2023→): The casual-wrapper era — today's leaders

Whiteout Survival (Century Games, Feb 2023)

Last War: Survival (First Fun, 2023)

The era-4 thesis The 2023+ winners didn't change the 4X core at all — same timers, alliances, wars, whales. They changed the first hour and the ad that precedes it: casual wrappers (survival sim, minigames) that recruit mass-market players cheaply and convert a slice of them into 4X lifers. The innovation battleground moved from the endgame to the funnel. Next wave already visible: "SLG + strong narrative" (Dark War: Survival $380M in 2025; Last Z $470M).

Interview tip The strongest market take you can offer: "The 4X core hasn't changed since Game of War — what's been re-invented three times is the acquisition funnel: art style (Lords Mobile), ad-creative honesty (Evony → Puzzles & Survival → Last War), and wrapper genre (Top War → Whiteout → Kingshot). Whoever owns the cheapest bridge from casual attention to alliance warfare owns the genre." Then connect it to Goodgame: Empire's browser-era funnel is exactly the part modern competitors have out-innovated (Chapter 5).
